What are the Blood tests available for Diabetes Patients?

When you hear the word diabetes the first thing that comes to your mind is getting a blood test to monitor your blood sugar levels. Usually, people are aware only about fasting and post prandial blood glucose test but to diagnose and manage diabetes, several blood tests can provide valuable information. Keeping in mind the different requirements of diabetes patients, we at health2home offer different blood tests for diabetes. Curious to know more, keep reading this post:

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) Test: The HBA1c test measures the average blood glucose level over a period of past 2-3 months. It provides an indication of long-term blood sugar control. A result of 6.5% or higher is suggestive of diabetes. People who do not have diabetes can take the HbA1c test as it can indicate if they are at risk of developing diabetes in future.

Random blood sugar (RBS): This test involves measuring your blood glucose level at any time, regardless of when you last ate. A random glucose level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher, along with diabetes symptoms, suggests diabetes.

Fasting Blood Glucose: This test measures your blood glucose level after an overnight fast. It helps diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. A normal fasting glucose level is below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L), while a level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate occasions indicates diabetes.

Fasting & Post Prandial Blood Glucose (FBS & PPBS): If you are diabetic, your physician must have asked you to conduct fasting blood glucose along with PPBS test. The post prandial blood glucose test is done to see how your body responds to sugar and starch after you eat a meal. The PPBS test is done after two hours of finishing the fasting test.

Insulin, Fasting: Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the Beta cells of the pancreatic islets. The Insulin hormone is considered as one of the most powerful hormone in the human body and is responsible for maintaining the blood sugar levels to a normal range. Insulin blood test also referred to as fasting insulin test, is a test used to measure the amount of insulin in the body. It is also used to monitor the treatment of abnormal insulin levels and to monitor insulin resistance.
